ATAA Membership enquiries
(by email)
Dear ATAA Chapter Councillor,

I am sending this email to all ATAA Chapter Councillors and board members because we really need your help. I hope that you find the information below useful in your own official role with the ATAA.

As you would have seen in other recent emails (from our National President, and others), in the current financial climate the ATAA is facing the difficult challenge of attracting new members, as well as simply retaining current members.

It is very possible that many of our members are not aware of all the FAB of ATAA membership (FAB = Features and Benefits). So in this email below I want to highlight these for you, and ask that you help to promote these to your colleagues in your own Chapter, as well as your friends and peers. Feel free to print this email and take it with you.

By the way - How did you go with the sets of presentation slides that I referred to in my last email (the February edition)? In case you missed it you can see that email here.

In the next edition of this email to chapter Councillors I will share some of the ideas from around the chapters that you might find useful in your own chapter.

If you have something to share, please feel free to write to me. If you are no longer an ATAA Councillor, please send me an email to update my records - simply reply to this email.

best regards

Marketing tips for you!

Firstly, two marketing tips for you as you promote ATAA membership to others:

(1) Radio station WII-FM? (ie. double u, double i, F.M.)

What's In It For Me? - W.I.I.F.M. This acronym is very useful to remember. It is a well-known marketing tool. Whenever we try to sell a product or service, it is very useful for us to put on the buyer's hat, and ask ourselves: "Why would I buy this product? What's in it for me?" So when we try to sell ATAA membership to people we meet up with, it is very useful to bear this in mind. (For more details, try Googling WIIFM.)

(2) Sell the sizzle, not the steak

The other thing that is very useful for us to remember when selling ATAA membership is that we need to actively talk up the benefits to the buyer, and not the features of the product. The car that the car yard is selling might have a large boot; but what might really interest the buyer is that they can carry a lot of stuff in the boot - there is a subtle difference. We need to be selling the sizzle, and not the steak. (For more information about this, try Googling the phrase sell the sizzle not the steak.)

Newspaper articles - almost 100!

Many of our ATAA members will know that for a couple of years now, five of the Melbourne ATAA members have been contributing to articles in the Tuesday edition of The Age Melbourne newspaper. We prepare a price chart, make some notes, and send the material to a journalist who embellishes the material and submits for publication. In 2012, these articles are also published in the Sydney Morning Herald, and on various Fairfax web sites. And we have almost reached the grand total of 100 articles!

You can see a summary list of all these articles, details about them, and view the articles from a link on this web page: www.robertbrain.com/ataa/.

Feel free to encourage your members and others to watch The Age and SMH paper on a Tuesday, and to look for these articles on line. Do you have a Facebook account? It will be very beneficial for the ATAA if you could click on the related "Like" and other buttons on the Fairfax web pages. This will help to promote the ATAA in the broader community.
If you are having trouble logging in to the ATAA web site, feel free to email to, or phone, our Admin Secretary Anna in the ATAA office in Sydney - details here.

I do hope you find this information and the materials useful.
Please feel free to send feedback and ideas.
More marketing and related information coming in a few weeks time.

Best Regards
