(by email)
Dear ATAA Councillor,

I am sending this email to all ATAA Chapter Councillors and board members to both highlight some important information that will be of interest to you, and to also ask you for your own ideas on some special and important topics.

The ATAA board, currently comprising nine directors, had two retirements and two new directors as of the successful and uneventful AGM held in Perth in October (the ATAA AGM meetings are typically rather short and a mere formality). You can view a list of the directors on the ATAA web site by logging into the Member Area, and selecting: Corporate > Directors.

To help save on costs, the ATAA board is meeting in person just once this year, in a few days time (1-2 December) in Sydney, and some of the topics under discussion will be of great interest to you (more topic details below). So the board would really like to hear your own opinions, and receive your input. Feel free to reply to this email asap (before the board meeting by Thursday 29 November).

Brief reminder of earlier topics in these occasional emails: The sets of presentation slides for use at Chapter meetings and the Trading and Investing Expos - referred to in the February email; and marketing tips (radio station WII-FM, and selling the sizzle, not the steak) - in the April email

If you are no longer an ATAA Councillor, please send me an email to update the records - simply reply to this email. If you have something to share, please feel free to write to me.

best regards

What do your Chapter visitors think?
We often have visitors to our chapter meetings, and we might wonder what they really think about the organisation, and the chapter. If we put ourselves into their shoes, we could imagine that they will hope to be warmly welcomed, and that they won't be left standing around on their own while everyone else is chatting in their own little cliques. And the same applies to our new members who hope to benefit from the networking.

Of course, one way to address this is for each chapter to have at least one person nominated as the Chapter "Ambassador", or the "visitor welcomer". By having someone appointed to this very important role, it means that one person can focus on mixing with the unfamiliar faces (the ones without the member name tag or a visitors tag), and can introduce themselves with a smile, explain what happens at the meeting, and introduce the visitor to someone who might be able to have a common conversation.

Does your chapter have anyone nominated as the "ambassador" or similar? Please send me an email with a short answer - yes you do, or no you don't. We are very interested.
Member retention and recruitment
This is currently a very hot topic around the ATAA board table, as the membership numbers are very challenging. If you have some good tips, or ideas, about how to improve our member retention, or how to recruit new members, then please drop us a line to share. Even the wacky ideas might be able to be massaged into something very useful.

Chapter benefits- In case there is any doubt about the long list of benefits for members of the ATAA, they are recorded in a couple of places. It does include: past journals, meeting presentations, DVDs in the library, networking, formal education (and post-nominal letters after your name). You can see them on the ATAA web site, and in the April edition of this email to Councillors.
Membership renewal incentive
You would have seen in earlier ATAA monthly email newsletters to all ATAA members that we are offering an incentive for members to renew their membership before it falls due. Members who renew before their expiry date will be automatically entered into the prize draw. There are three separate draws in the current financial year, with the first draw completed back in July. The second draw will take place in early December for the members who renew from July to November, and the third draw next June for the members renewing in the months of December to May.

On each occasion the prize is either a voucher to the value of $130 for books and/or DVDs from the Educated Investor Bookshop, or a 6-month extension of your ATAA membership (your choice). For more details, refer to your past editions of the ATAA Monthly email Newsletter.
Education and training
Another current hot topic on the board table is that of education and training for ATAA members. The current Kaplan offering is great, but does not address the need for very short and inexpensive overviews for both new and prospective members. The board has been working on preparing some education initiatives, and is always pleased to hear from members regarding their own preferences for topics, duration, method, timing, cost, etc. So, please feel free to drop us a line with your views.
Published articles!
You are probably aware that the ATAA has arranged for some members to have material published in Fairfax newspapers and on the web. You can see a list of all 127 articles here, with links to scanned copies and to online Fairfax website versions.

We have also had material published in the monthly ASX Investor Update email newsletter, in the June, August and October editions - see them here. The ASX web site invites people to register for free (at MyASX), and subscribe to their free monthly Investor Update newsletter which goes to 220,000 email addresses.

We are always happy to take feedback on these initatives, so please feel free to write to us.
If you are having trouble logging in to the ATAA web site, feel free to email to, or phone, our Admin Secretary Anna in the ATAA office in Sydney - details here.

I do hope you find this information and the materials useful.
Please feel free to send feedback and ideas.
More ATAA marketing and related information coming soon.

Best Regards
