Toolbox eNews update | #77 - March 2017 |
|
|
Dear Reader,
This Share Market Toolbox eNews email is going to all of our subscribing Share Market Toolbox
Members as normal, and to the non-Members who have expressed an
interest in receiving it. (Any non-members who want to access the detail
in the Members Area can easily join as a Toolbox Member
- it's not expensive.) These days I do endeavour to do an update like
this every second month; but sometimes the time line slips a little. You
can see previous editions in the eNews Archive. I have also recently been updating the Toolbox Master Index so as to also refer to the topics in the past eNews emails (all 76 of them).
It's now a couple of years since I wrote on the significance of chart patterns, so it's time for me to update the previous materials.
For many technical
analysts, it really is a "light bulb" moment when they realise that the
price charts, and the patterns in the charts, actually tell stories
about the underlying opinions of the market participants.
Since this dawned on me some years ago, I have been talking about it in the following words:-
Price charts summarise the underlying opinions and emotions of the market participants. Every chart tells a story. It pays to understand the stories in the price charts.
One key way to read and understand the stories in the price charts is by understanding the chart patterns. See the updates for the relevant Share Market Toolbox content (below).
And if you would like to see a history of all Toolbox content changes, see the special Toolbox content update blog, and you can select the option there to "Follow" that blog to get details about new updates as soon as they are made.
Any non-member who no
longer wants to receive this material can simply unsubscribe from ALL
topics using the SafeUnsubscribe link at the bottom - or just Update Your Profile to change your interests. ( BUT NOTE: Toolbox Members and BullCharts mailing list members should not unsubscribe, as it will remove you from all my mail lists.) Please
remember, anything mentioned here, and in the referred eBook Articles,
is for general education only, and is not advice of any sort.
Please read on...

About the Toolbox eNews emails...
Here's a short note to the recently new Toolbox Members, and new readers of this eNews email:- These share market Toolbox eNews emails
always go to Toolbox Members (a part of the Toolbox service), and to
the people who have registered to receive occasional information about
the Share Market. This is intended to be a bi-monthly email with some
pointers and tips on focused topics - see a quick intro to the eNews emails. They often include references to specific eBook Articles in my Share Market Toolbox, as well as key web pages in the free area of the Toolbox (eg. on the extensive Share Market web page).
I have been writing the eBook Articles since October 2008 - that's a
few years now, and these eNews emails help you to navigate to related
and useful information in my Share Market Toolbox.

This month's focus:
Chart patterns (in price charts) tell real stories
The relevant information on this topic in the Share Market Toolbox includes the following, some of which has been updated in recent months:-
- Revised web page - Chart Patterns
- This web page presents some of the basic and introductory information
on chart patterns, and includes links to the relevant eBook Articles.
- Public presentation on Chart Patterns
- Last year I prepared a presentation for the BullCharts User Group on
chart patterns. The simple handout document is freely available, while
the presentation slides are available to Regular Toolbox members, and
the slides with the extra Speaker Notes are available to Premium Toolbox
Members. There is a lot of content overlap between the Chart Patterns
web page and this presentation material.
- Dow Theory web page
- A lot of the available information about Dow Theory includes the
interpretation of chart patterns. So for a more complete understanding
of the topic, make sure to visit my Dow Theory web page, and the other
links on that page to eBook Articles.
- Candlesticks and patterns
- Another angle to the topic of chart patterns is the broad topic of
candlesticks and candle patterns. When studying charts looking for
patterns, we can find patterns by looking just at the line chart, but
sometimes the chart patterns are clearer, or a little different, when
studying the candlestick charts.
- eBook Article TA-3410, "Chart patterns - introduction"
- This (free) eBook article was first written a few years ago, and at 9
pages long was only available to Toolbox Members. Because of the
importance of understanding the usefulness of price charts, I removed
all of the advanced chart pattern details out of this Article to make it
just 4 pages long, and able to be put in the public domain and made
available to the general public. All of the advanced chart pattern
information is now in the Article TA-3420.
- eBook Article TA-3420, "Chart patterns - more details"
- This eBook Article comprises a lot of material that was originally in
Article TA-3410. It is 7 pages long with an introduction to a number of
chart pattern types.
- eBook Article TA-3500, "Chart patterns - Triangles" - This earlier 3-page article provides more information about the various Triangle chart patterns.
- eBook Article TA-3600, "Megaphone chart pattern"
- This earlier 5-page article provides information about the special
expanding wedge pattern known as the Megaphone pattern. Back in 2010
when we were writing regular articles for the Fairfax papers, we spotted
a Megaphone pattern forming on the XAO index, and it was written up in
The Age (see a scanned copy of the article #16 in the Toolbox).
- Technical Analysis big picture
- All of the above are aspects of the broader subject of technical
analysis, so make sure to see the Technical Analysis page in the Toolbox
for useful information to help put all of this into context.
Toolbox non-Members - Can't see the above reserved eBook Articles? You can at least see the first page of them from the Articles Table of Contents page in the Toolbox.
Regarding
my growing collection of eBook (PDF) Articles, don't forget to see the
latest Table of Contents pages for all articles (see links in the
side-bar above right). There are now a total of 147 Articles in this collection - a huge total of 675 pages of information! You can see the Table of Contents for all eBook Articles here (recently new or updated ones are highlighted), and the Toolbox Master Index which includes the eBook Articles, plus web page references, and helpful videos.

eBook (PDF) Articles - Summary
Since October 2008 I have accumulated quite a collection of eBook (PDF) Articles
on three subject areas - Share Trading/Investing, Technical Analysis
and BullCharts software (actually more than 670 pages of material
in more than 140 articles). Along with the many web pages in the
Toolbox, and the sets of public presentation slides,
all of this material is invaluable for both new and experienced
investors and traders. I write brief notes in this eNews email to
highlight specific Articles on targeted topics, and sometimes referring
to new or updated web pages in the Toolbox (also see a history of Toolbox updates). I am also writing new Articles and updating existing ones as required. For more information please see:
|
Article front pages
For any new readers of my Toolbox eBook Articles, there are some useful introductory Articles including an Introduction and an Overview Article for each of the three subject areas. You can see them here:

Any problems?
What if you have some
sort of problem with accessing the Toolbox and any of these Articles? Or
maybe the Username and Password doesn't work. If there is any problem
at all, simply contact me by email or phone. The best email address for
this is: support@robertbrain.com.
Occasionally emails disappear - the system thinks they are spam, or the
ISP might think they are spam. If I don't reply within a day or so,
please contact me by either email address or phone.

In Closing
There
is nothing secret in this email, so feel free to forward it to someone
if you think they might benefit from the information, or from being a
Toolbox Member. The easiest way to do this is to use the "Forward Email"
link at the bottom.
I
am also confident that my Toolbox Members won't be sharing their
username and password with non-members. It is not fair that I spend all
this time preparing the materials, and then my Toolbox Members pay money
to have legitimate access, only to let some people pay nothing to read
and view the details.
Please
feel free to email an individual Article to others as a sample; but if
they want online access to all the materials, it is pretty cheap, so
they should subscribe as a Toolbox Member. There is information about Toolbox Membership in the Quick Links section at right.
Always happy to receive feedback, or suggestions for new content or improvements.
Until next month, happy investing or trading,
Robert B. Brain (mobile: 0438 355 910)
ps: watch out for the sharks in the ocean!
